'The God Who Speaks'
celebrating, living and sharing God's word

Scripture is at the centre of everything the Church does. The word of God shapes our prayer and worship. The Bible shows us how to understand the world, how we are called to live and relate to each other.

In this  year of the 10th anniversary of Verbum Domini and the 1600th anniversary of the death of St Jerome, who translated the Bible into Latin, the Catholic Bishops invite us to listen afresh to the word of God, to encounter anew the presence of that word, and to proclaim it afresh in the Church and the World.

St Matthew's Gospel Day-by-day here

Prayer
Living God,

you walk alongside us
and speak to us throughout the Scriptures.
Your Son, Jesus Christ, listens to our hopes and fears
and shows us how to live for one another.
Send us the Holy Spirit to open our hearts and minds
so that we may be your witnesses throughout the world.
Amen.

DR19 Thurs - Fri 7-8 Feb
Fr John and six parishioners attended the two day Divine Renovation 19 conference. it was challenging, stimulating and, sometimes, noisy, with maybe 400 participants including at least sixty priests and four bishops.

The basic aim of the conference was to encourage parishes to have a stonger and much more explicit focus on bringing people to Jesus (on 'fishing', in the language of this Sunday's gospel). Curious?

Saint Oscar Romero canonised 14 October 18

From Cross to Resurrection
All-loving and ever-living God,
you gave your servant
Oscar Romero
the courage to witness
to the Gospel of Christ,
even to the point of giving his life
in the pursuit of justice.

Help us to love you,
to seek you with all our hearts,
and to rejoice in the resurrection victory,
over all oppression,
of your beloved Christ,
living and reining
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God for ever and ever. Amen.

The short animation below gives an overview of  Saint Oscar Romero.

"Each time we look upon the poor, on the farm workers who harvest the coffee, the sugarcane, or the cotton, the sugarcane, or the cotton, or the farmer who joins the caravan of workers looking to earn their savings for the year.....remember, there is the face of Christ........

The face of Christ is among the sacks and baskets of the farm worker; the face of Christ is among those who are tortured and mistreated in the prisons; the face of Christ is dying of hunger in the children who have nothing to eat; the face of Christ is in the poor who ask the church for their voice to be heard. How can the church deny this request when it is Christ who is telling us to speak for him?"
